The day I discovered the true wealth of Nigeria

Image
It's not all about oil! When I first arrived in Nigeria to set up the country's first GSM mobile network, Econet Wireless Nigeria (now Airtel Nigeria), I had to serve as the company's interim CEO for about six months, until we appointed someone substantive. This meant I practically lived in Nigeria for most of that time.  It was a remarkable experience, and one which will remain with me all my life.  Nigeria is one of the most exciting countries in the world, and could be the next China before the turn of this century. I just want to share with you one particular incident which led me to that conclusion:  As many people know, today Nigeria has over 120m mobile phones users. To imagine that I made the first ever official GSM mobile call in Nigeria on 6th August 2001 seems almost unbelievable...

Her father was blinded in a factory accident, and her mum died when she was five.     Determined to be successful, she quit school at 16 and went to live with her uncle in Shenzen, saying  "I don't want to die regretting what I didn't do.” She got a factory job making watch faces for $1 a day, and sent the money back to her father. Bored with the job, after three months she quit, but was given a promotion instead. Guessing why, she said  “Maybe ...

7 Skills Every Young African Needs for Employment

Image
In the course of my work, I have come across many talented job-seekers who, due to certain skills shortages, are unemployable. It is easy to state that it is the responsibility of the job-seeker to be employable, but many are oblivious to how to do that. Exactly which skills will make them attractive to potential employers? Statistics have shown that that sub-Saharan Africa’s demographic explosion (from 430 million to over a billion working-age people over the next 40 years) will make Africa the largest labour market in the world. This creates unprecedented challenges and opportunities for the region – opportunities that will be missed if the working population lacks the skills to contribute positively to organizations they work in, either as employees or entrepreneurs. In sub-Saharan Africa, job opportunities are scarce. The unemployment rate, which was 77.4% in 2013, remains higher than in any other region in the world, according to the International Labour Organizatio...

This is a guest post that promises to be very informative, enjoy. Shelter is one of the basic necessities of every human being and if one should get his own, sixty percent of his/her life challenges are solved. No wonder housing is one of the transformation agenda of the present administration. The Act stipulates that a Nigerian worker earning the minimum national wage and above per annum in either the public or private sectors of the economy shall contribute 2.5% of his/her basic monthly salary to the fund. Though this provision makes it compulsory for Nigerian workers and those in self-employment to participate i...

Meet 4 young Nigerian entrepreneurs that transformed their lives through the Internet

Image
To say the Internet will fundamentally change the way people discover and access opportunities would be disingenuous.  The Internet has already restructured the old order of learning and growth. Today, there are over 48 million Nigerians online – connecting, creating, and accessing opportunities regardless of class, educational background or affiliations.   Four years ago, when Eric Obuh, a.k.a Vocal Slender, was told about videos on him circulating on the internet, he could not have guessed how much impact that exposure would have on his life. Eric, who at the time was making a living from trading off disposed items in Lagos, had just been featured in the BBC documentary “Welcome to Lagos”. What he didn’t know at the time was that the documentary had also been shared on YouTube, and the world was already talking about the Nigerian who gave up his love of music because he didn’t have the means or affiliations needed to break into the music industry.  ...

Image
Unemployment is continually on the raise in country across the world, and here in Nigeria people see no hopes of the conditions changing for the better, rather it is believed to only get worst.
