Passion will only take you so far

Got this by mail, it made so much sense I decided to blog it. ................................................... Do you have one? So you have a good voice; nice. You have a good sense of humor, you are articulate and you have been watching television and listening to radio all your life. You are abreast with the latest trends and current affairs, and also have a very vast music knowledge base. With all this you think you are ready for a job on radio or television? Well maybe; but only as an intern or an assistant. Electronic media is not as easy as it appears, and unfortunately for you, there is no static and standard kit set to undertake a career in radio or television. Many people will tell you that before you venture into radio or television, you should have the passion for it. They are correct; but that is not the whole story. Passion will get you in the door (as long as the earlier mentioned tools are also at your disposal); passion will keep you focused on the job, even wh...

The Triple-Filter Test

Image
This is a great practice I recommend for all... In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?" "Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

THERE IS A SOLUTION TO EVERY PROBLEM...

Image
Many hundreds of years ago in a small Italian town, a merchant had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to the moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter so he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry the daughter. Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. The moneylender told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag. The girl would then have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender's wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the moneylender bent over...

BUILDING BRIDGES

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days work," he said. "Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?" "Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbour, in fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he ...
