Chinedu Okoli AKA Flavour N'abania
Flavour was born on the 23 November 1983 as the first son of a large family consisting of four siblings and seven step siblings. He is a highly celebrated Nigerian recording artist, dancer, songwriter, and performer. He began his musical career at age 13 as a drummer for a local church in his hometown of Enugu State. Growing up was tough for himself and his four siblings as they had to
depend on his Mother’s little earnings from her Civil Service job. In
order to survive, they hawked sachets of Pure Water on the streets of
Enugu, Eastern Nigeria. His passion and zeal to succeed was what kept him going even though he had no support from his family over his chosen career. (Back then Musicians were not really all that successful and were perceived as wayward) His Mum was his biggest challenge, He says- ‘I saw my mum as my biggest challenge and I was ready to prove
her wrong’. Flavour N’abania kicked off his career at Bubbles Plaza,
Enugu State. That was where he was given the name ‘Flavour’ by his
excited fans.
The resident pastor at his church introduced him to a friend, Chris I Ordor, the CEO of SoundCity Communications.
Mr. Ordor had just started a musical company aimed at training young
musicians on the basics of music and nurturing them all the way to a
professional level. In 1996, Flavour was invited to join the company on an educational scholarship to study music.
After three years of playing the drums, Flavour started playing the
drums professionally. In 1999, Flavour moved on from playing the drums
and started playing the keyboard. He also used to provide backing vocals for other musicians at SoundCity.
Until he started bringing home little money and contributing to domestics, like buying the first video CD player, his family gave him a hard time but later understood his passion and offered support. He started his own band and broke even. In 2005, Flavour released his debut album N'abania
through Obaino Music. The album's success was relative and limited to
Eastern Nigeria, particularly, Enugu State. Flavour collaborated with
Mr. Raw on the album's lead single titled "N'abania". He has been growing successfully even since.
Flavour's story teaches us to believe in our goals and dreams. no matter our challenges, If Flavour a once upon a time pure water seller can make it, why can't you. I DARE YOU TO BE.
