Austin Jay-jay Okocha (Muhammet Yavuz)
Austin JAY-JAY Okocha is one of Africa's greatest names in football and one of my personal favorite, Born on 14th August, 1973; he is widely regarded as the best Nigerian player of his generation. Also known for his great step-overs, skill, technique, and being 'so good
that they named him twice' (a line immortalized in a terrace chant while
Okocha played for Bolton Wanderers). He is a dual Nigerian-Turkish citizen, having acquired Turkish citizenship as "Muhammet Yavuz" while playing for Süper Lig team Fenerbahçe
Okocha was born in Enugu, Enugu State, but
originates from Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, Nigeria. Austin got his nick name "Jay-Jay" from his elder brother James, who started playing football first. His immediate older brother
Emmanuel was also called Emma Jay-jay, but the name stuck with Okocha. Like every great footballer from Africa, he started playing football from his childhood right on the streets and nothing else could surpass the passion and satisfaction gotten from the fun. Back then, anything round in shape can pass for a ball. he continued pushing his passion and developed his skills, playing from one local filed to another even with all the financial challenges of the family.
In 1990 he started off professionally when he joined Enugu Rangers.
In his time at the club he produced many spectacular displays including
one where he rounded off and scored a goal, against experienced
Nigerian goalkeeper William Okpara in a match against BCC Lions. Later that year, he went on holiday to West Germany, the country that had just won the 1990 FIFA World Cup, so he could watch German league football. His friend Binebi Numa was playing in the Third Divison for Borussia Neunkirchen,
and one morning Okocha accompanied Numa to training, where he asked to
join in. The Neunkirchen coach was impressed with Okocha's skills and
invited him back the next day before offering him a contract.A year later, he joined FC Saarbrücken, but stayed only a few months with the Bundesliga side before a move to the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Austin is today , happily married to
Nkechi Okocha and blessed with two children, Daniella
and A-Jay.Austin followed his dreams and never gave up, I DARE YOU TO BE.
