Passion will only take you so far

Got this by mail, it made so much sense I decided to blog it. ................................................... Do you have one? So you have a good voice; nice. You have a good sense of humor, you are articulate and you have been watching television and listening to radio all your life. You are abreast with the latest trends and current affairs, and also have a very vast music knowledge base. With all this you think you are ready for a job on radio or television? Well maybe; but only as an intern or an assistant. Electronic media is not as easy as it appears, and unfortunately for you, there is no static and standard kit set to undertake a career in radio or television. Many people will tell you that before you venture into radio or television, you should have the passion for it. They are correct; but that is not the whole story. Passion will get you in the door (as long as the earlier mentioned tools are also at your disposal); passion will keep you focused on the job, even when the financial dividends are not yet visible, and it is passion that will wake you up and get you excited about your work. Unfortunately, passion never got anyone promoted, passion never took a regular presenter to the realm of the A-listers and passion in isolation never brought a paycheck. As vital as passion is to every potential presenter, it cannot exist in isolation. I have seen young passionate people; even undertake the futile mission of a media career in the absence of the other requirements (voice, trivia knowledge and an understanding of the industry). For you to succeed in the media, you will need more than passion. You need to also build tangible pointers for external evaluation. What does this all mean? It’s simple. Passion cannot be sponsored, valued and it cannot be used as an index for measuring performance. You need to develop the personal brand, this goes beyond making yourself popular by pasting your picture on every blog and begging for follows on twitter. It means you have to read, you have to be trained and you have to increase your general knowledge. Your development is not a one stop event. It is a continuous process that must be undertaken at frequent intervals. Next time i will be talking to you about training yourself. If you think you know it all, then the media is not the place for you. Nnamdi Obanya. MSc The Jobshow, Nigeria. Twitter: thejobshow_ng BBM: 2969F629
